Do you need master keys for your business?

What are master keys?

A master key is a key that can open multiple locks within a master key system. A master key system allows two or more keys to open one lock and provides different levels of access at each stage of the system’s hierarchy. This provides extra levels of security to your premises by enabling you to control who can access which areas without the hassle of large amounts of individual keys.

How do master keys work?

Master key systems work in a hierarchy arrangement and provide flexibility when deciding who has access to what properties.

The top key in the hierarchy is the ‘Grand Master Key’, this fits all the locks. Next are the ‘Master Keys’ and the keys underneath those are ‘Sub Master Keys’. Both these keys fit a smaller range of locks. The final line of keys are the ‘User Keys’ or ‘Servant Keys’. These offer the least amount of access, only fitting one lock.

This system can be replicated for fobs, cards and mechatronic locks and keys, using electronic reading devices. They can also be ‘networked’ to a single control point for greater monitoring.

What are the benefits of having a master key system?

A master key system allows management to have full control over all areas of a property. Employees at different levels can be given the required level of access. Limiting staff access can increase overall security and management control over property access.

Is there a master key for all locks?

There is no single master key that will open all locks. A locksmith will only be able to open your lock if they know the key number, without this they have no way of knowing what key to use.

How do you identify a master key?

A master key is any key that can open two or more locks. A master key looks like any other key within the master key system. The only differentiating feature to a master key is its cut, and sometimes an identifying letter stamped on it.

What is the purpose of a master key?

The primary purpose of a master key is to open several locks within a master key system. Master keys provide an added level of security and convenience to your business by reducing the number or keys needed and restricting access at different levels of your business.

What are the benefits of master keys for your business?

  • Control over security

Having a master key system for your business can provide you with a higher level of control over who can enter what parts of your property. The hierarchy structure of your master key system allows you to give employees access to only specific areas meaning you are in full control over who can go where based on their role within the business structure.

As individual keys can open several locks this reduces the number of keys needed for your team and the number of distributed keys that allow access to your business. This not only increases ease of use but also reduces the risks of key loss.

Master key duplication is considerably harder than normal keys. In most cases, the original master key needs to be taken to the original locksmith to be duplicated, or permission needs to be given first before a new locksmith can duplicate the key. This also reduces the risk of break-ins due to lost keys.

  • Convenience

Often businesses have multiple areas of access meaning that having a different key for every lock can be very inconvenient and stressful. A master key system simplifies this without taking away from the security. This convenience is highly beneficial not only for day-to-day use but also in the case of emergencies as it can significantly save time in accessing different areas of a property.
